A Focus on the Undervalued. Applying Business Solutions in Pursuit of the Common Good.
At Public Democracy, we repurpose the most sophisticated tools of the modern Surveillance Economy for Social Impact. We build data and insights on the undervalued in our society and our digital marketplace. We are motivated by a moral calling to correct social inequality and economic injustice, and we recognize that those societal failings are also market inefficiencies, ripe for disruption.
Unlike most in the digital marketing industry who see ads and online data as tools to get people to buy a specific product, we see digital advertising and personalized data as a means of understanding our audiences and shaping our offerings to meet their needs.
We’ve applied that understanding to our work over the past decade with a wide array of civic, service, political, advocacy, and community building initiatives.
We Built & Collected Our Data Differently, Too
Our data is the fruit of nearly two decades of work with amazing organizations, individuals, and corporations seeking to empower, connect, and give voice to Americans working together in pursuit of the common good. Instead of trying to get our audience’s attention so they’d do what we want, we always sought to understand what our audience valued and to shape each campaign to meet their hopes and needs.
Data is the first asset in human history where its value is not based on scarcity but abundance. The more it is combined and used and shared, the more valuable it becomes. This creates new economic models and opportunities for collaboration and building value from service, rather than control of audiences, which is both right and ultimately more successful.
When data measures commitment over attention; when it reflects people’s hopes and beliefs in what is possible together instead of what they’ll react to or accept; when it tracks where they believe they can make a difference, rather than just what they will buy … when data does these things, it provides much deeper insights into what people truly value. With that insight comes the potential to do incredible things.
